What's this terrible, terrible thing or things that kills you, mugs you, and also take any valuables that aren't locked away safely?

On a more serious or funny note (depending on your POV):
I always presumed that you die of undercooling. Not sure why. The respawning, loosing money, destroying goods-thing is of course just a game mechanic; But to expand on that idea:
At night, paramedics in suits to protect them from the cold air are searching the place, looking for unconscious people to drag them home. As compensation they take a small amount of money, though if you are broke they do it for solely humanitarian reasons.
The goods left outside also get destroyed by the cold.
