Valve Game Assets in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?

Post by Mutant Enemy »

Interesting news running through blogs and major gaming sites today. It seems that in-game art assets from both Valve and iD games have been found inside of GSC's newly released title S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - An unauthorized move. In terms of what's being used from Half-Life 2 specifically in this title, at the moment it seems just the water and its normal maps were apparently ripped, at first glance, from the game.

Stalker is real good aye? ripping off Half Life 2 and Doom 3 XD

Personally, I'm surprised no one noticed this earlier... I noticed quite a few half life 2 related textures in stalker. I doubt valve will press any charges though.

Oh dear,
Valve's textures got nicked.
Boo-hoo.

I say it's no biggie.
I mean, I know it takes time to make textures.
But let's face it, they're just textures.
As long as they didn't steal something like the engine, or models, it's really not that much of a problem.
I will spit right in your fraking face.

Well for another game to use art asserts they don't own.. Its iffy. For my own game outside of source I wouldn't use assets from other games to get by. Not even as placeholders.

I see what you're saying.
But my opinion still stands.
It's really not affecting Valve.
If someone stole textures and sprites from my game.
I would be honored.
That they were either too lazy to make their own
(or preferably)
That they thought my work was good enough to be in their game.

sorry for doublepost but here's something you people should know
STALKER not nicking art after all

Internet goes wild for nuttin'

By Wily Ferret: Monday 16 April 2007, 11:30

SO IT TURNS OUT
that STALKER isn't actually nicking lots of other people's artwork. Big surprise?

The internet was a-storm over the weekend with rumours that textures had been found in STALKER's game engine that looked similar to textures found in Half-Life 2 and Doom 3. We previously reported the rumours.

Thanks to reader Rob S. for pointing out that the water textures used by both Valve and GSC GameWorld, the makers of STALKER, come from a texture pack sold by Marlin Studios. The chaps at Marlin make all kinds of exciting textures, including 'Home & Office Furniture - High Detail, Low Price!' and 'Traffic - Low Poly Pretextured Vehicles, SUVs and trucks you can even animate!'

Stunning stuff.

Valve has confirmed that it picked up some textures from Marlin for HL2, and separate sources have discovered that the IMP_Light texture that it was thought could have been pilfered from Doom 3 was, in fact, just a standard Impact Light texture, rather than referring to the Doom 3 monster.
