Ok, so we have so many theories about this place. But my theory is:
Aperture Science takes place around the same time as the Black Mesa Incident. I think this because:
-the projector still works
-the lights still work
-the offices are in great condition
-the computers are running
Why isn't anyone around then? I still can't figure this one out, maybe they wanted to keep you away from human contact? Or maybe the portal storms hit the planet, and the facility was evacuated? Or it could be something as simple as the weekend.
As for the bad shape of the backroom area's, well, this could be because the place was built in the 80's, and with such a poor budget. They may have cut maintenance costs.
What do you think? Makes just as much sense as the other's, huh.

-The place has let itself go after the combine invasion.
-GLADOS is actually a human in the metal interior(one part really looks like body bag,not to mention that she squirms when the rockets start hitting her)and she has been sending out chell clones to kill her.
