Tools (Useful Programs) List

Post by Neico »

Well since we have so many usefull threads here like the modding link list, why not a Tools List?

One Tool i really like to use and saved me now some hard work in many situations i tought to just post that list (well actually i only have 1 that i can remember maybe i find some others :O)

Note: since the Forum won't let me use some simple HTML code (even i enabled it) i can't make a nice looking list and will then make the list into the Wiki once i imported the Tools posted here...

Serverdoc, restarts crashed/frozen servers like serverchecker, but has lot more options, like letting servers run on a specific core:

http://www.serverdoc.com/

VTF edit, import and export textures:

http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?c=178#p178

360g, creates vmt and vtf files with an easy to use vgui:

http://www.map-lounge.de/360g/index.html

MAN (Map Analyst), checks a bsp file for custom content (stuff thats not in the specified gcfs) and zips it in the bsp, all automatically:

http://www.map-lounge.de/man/index.html

Source MDL Texture Info, tells you what textures a model is using:

DuctTape:

http://ducttape.sourceforge.net/

Info taken from Interlopers (http://www.interlopers.net/:

First release of DuctTape
Some of you may already know about DuctTape, which has been worked on by a couple of resident 'lopers. It's a handy little tool that aims to make your modding life easier and it's just reached the first Alpha release:

"The intent of DuctTape is to unify and automate creation of scripts, command line utilities, and compiling. For example, DuctTape can create and compile an SMD into a MDL in a matter of a few clicks. It also contains a soundscape editor.

We introduce a new concept of scripted texture builds - which are authored graphically, of course. Rather than having to go into VTFEdit everytime you change your source image, DuctTape will detect that the source has changed and rebuild the VTFs that are based upon it. This type of functionality is ubiquitous, actually. If you change a map, SMD, QC, etc DuctTape will rebuild your outdated game content with the click of a button (The build mod button in the toolbar)."

You can grab a copy and stay updated via their brand new website.

That sounds very useful. I won't try it until it's in beta though unless somebody here has really good experiences with it.

Found a new thing next to Crazybump

nDo: http://cgted.com/
Basically a normal map editor/creator with a simple UI, it's handy for a quick normal map if you want to make one for certain textures.
Tutorials and download in link

Some stuff made w/ it:

^ I might give it a try, at the moment I'm struggling with ssbump maps (which require a normal map to generate from).

Image

Ive been creating normal maps in VTFedit, though this program can generate normals and ssbump:

http://ssbump-generator.yolasite.com/

I have crazybump (havent tried it yet)
I think my problem is I need a tutorial guiding me to as what makes a good normal and ssbump.

EDIT: Alright well something I've worked out when using the ssbump generator, it actually generates the image upsidedown and back to front, so you have to open it in an image editor and rotate it 180 degrees and flip the horizontal.

Alright, I just took a look at the link you gave and the tool looks very powerful and there's a handy tutorial that comes with it, so I'm going to try improve my normals and re-generate to ssbump and compare!

Nobody added the OrangeBox jigglebone decompiler? LOL

http://obsidianconflict.net/forums/view ... =10&t=4353

^Useful if you don´t have time to "re activate" the jigglebones of a model.

agreed, but links come and go as do versions. The wiki needs the basic stuff kept upto date, and more tutorials aswell as links to all these programs.
