As to the "correct collision model" thing, that could get quite complex depending on the shape of the curve (whether it's concave or not). For example, the curve on picture three would need a very complex collision box, though I've no idea how high the impact on server/ingame performance actually is, might also be that its not a problem at all.
I know a program that can automatically generate smd (and mdl) files out of brushes without much hassle, but it's still in development and I don't think support for concave collision boxes has been implemented yet:
