Obsidian Update

Post by skidz »

Valve recently released the huge SDK update which included some new toys. The update also fixed a number of Hammer and model compiler issues as well. Hyper has finished implementing the new code and everything is working well. So now for the next release, on top of Valves updates and some fixes, we will be giving some of the maps an HDR lighting pass. This image to the right shows HDR in the docks map, just as the player walks from the darker warehouse area to the outside area.

I think it makes the maps pretty sexy, because hl2 normally is so dark and cold, can really pickup a map and make it look sunny and warm.
But the new code updates optimize a lot of things, so thats a plus.

Have you seen Valves HDR before? It doesnt stay in one exposure, its all dynamic. So it wouldnt look like that screenshot constantly, it would change and act like your eyes are adjusting to the new light level.

Always good to hear that progress on a mod is going well.

However, I personally feel that HDR does not belong in docks, as opposed to other maps. The map looks very cloudy and dreary, and it sets the atmosphere nicely. With HDR, it looks like it's bright and sunny, which really contrasts with what the map's lighting really looks like. As far as I know (Although I admit to knowing nothing about mapping and implementing features such as HDR), there's really no way to "tone down" the effects of HDR. Still, I will support whatever changes are made because I support this mod wholeheartedly in its entirety.
My mind is a swirling miasma of scintillating thoughts and turgid ideas.

Stadium will also get hdr and some changes. You can turn HDR off.
We dont have a lot of maps that really suit it atm. Docks is the only real open map that I could think of and we want to have it at least in acouple maps.

HDR is nice. A shame that my graphics card doesn't support it. :x

I just need to ask a few questions:
To allow HDR in my map, do I only have to do a HDR compile? :?:
How much larger is a HDR compiled map than a non-HDR? :?:
Even though my graphics card can't show HDR, can it do a proper HDR compile? :?:
